A village near South China’s Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site has undergone a drastic transformation in recent years. Spectators coming to watch rocket launches have turned it into a tourist hotspot. Our Li Jianhua has more.
Reminders of space exploration are everywhere here, a small village tucked away in the mountains on the island province of Hainan. From a fishing village to now a tourist destination, it owes its transformation to a spacecraft launch site about seven kilometers away. The head of the village says a sea change has happened here since the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site opened in 2014.
“Can we see rocket launches from here?”

As China gets ready to launch a mission to the moon in the coming days, the village is buzzing with excitement.
FU LIYA Migratory Birds Chorus “I’m from Chongqing, and I came to see the launch. I heard this is China’s first mission that can return with samples. I’m very excited to see it. I feel my country is getting stronger.”
Also alluring about the village are its vegetables and fruits, some of which were grown from seeds that were sent to space and brought back, to see how the space environment affects their germination. It’s not harvest time yet, but some plants are beginning to bear fruits.

“15 days! What’s the biggest difference between these and the regular ones?”
