Hainan Expo: Organizers unveil new look for event’s gibbon mascots

The mascots for this year’s Hainan Expo are donning a new look. The concept combines three aspects representing the southern Chinese province, as it gears up for the third China International Consumer Products Expo which will be held from April 11 to 15 in Haikou.

Gibbon mascots Yuanyuan and Xiaoxiao are going mechanical.

Marking the Hainan Expo’s third edition, organizers on Friday unveiled their new look, combining concepts of high-tech, advanced manufacturing and local culture.

Last year, their outfits were inspired by rice researchers, divers and astronauts.

Merchandise based on the mascots will also be available for purchase during the expo. The goal of these peripheral products is to promote the conservation of gibbons.

The province is home to 36 Hainan gibbons. They are endemic to the island and one of the rarest primates in the world, as well as the most endangered gibbon.

As of March 2, a total of 57 brands from close to 20 reputable domestic and international companies have confirmed the debut of 68 products at the expo. These include high-end cuisine, electronics, jewelry, cosmetics, and fragrances. Lin Wo, Sansha Satellite TV for CGTN.
