China’s resort island aims to receive 110m tourists by 2026

HAIKOU — South China’s Hainan province has officially launched a three-year action plan to promote the high-quality development of its tourism industry, setting a target of hosting 110 million tourists by 2026, local authorities announced at a press conference on Tuesday.

According to the action plan spanning from 2024 to 2026, the tourists, including 1.25 million inbound visitors, are expected to generate a total tourism revenue of 245 billion yuan ($34.5 billion), with the added value of the tourism industry set to exceed 12 percent of the province’s GDP.

The island province aspires to elevate itself as a leading national tourism destination, making notable strides in establishing an international tourism consumption center through a three-year period of pursuing balanced regional development, diversified tourism products, regulated tourism market, high-quality tourism services and a captivating tourism image, according to the provincial department of tourism, culture, radio, television and sport.

China aims to build Hainan into a globally influential tourism and consumption destination by 2035.
