Located on the Nanwan peninsula in Lingshui on the south coast of Hainan Province, Nanwan Monkey Island is the only tropical island nature reserve for macaque monkeys in China and the world.

The reserve is surrounded by the sea on three sides and is currently home to around 2,000 macaques. The island has a mild climate, a forest coverage rate of over 95 percent, and is home to many different species of fauna and flora, including coconut, litchi, pineapple and carambola. All of these help make it a perfect habitat for macaques.

The local authorities have undertaken a series of protective measures at the reserve over the years, with the aim of providing the monkeys with a better living environment.

Established in 1965, the nature reserve has developed into a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can take a 2,138 meter-long cross-sea cable car, the longest of its kind in China, or a ferry boat from Xincun Harbor to reach the reserve.
