{"id":277,"date":"2023-03-01T11:19:45","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T03:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ftpol.com\/en\/?p=277"},"modified":"2023-03-15T11:20:42","modified_gmt":"2023-03-15T03:20:42","slug":"deep-sea-museum-hainan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ftpol.com\/en\/deep-sea-museum-hainan.html","title":{"rendered":"Deep Sea Museum, Hainan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/02\/28102540\/Hainan-contest-plot.jpg\" alt=\"Contest site: Deep Sea Museum, Hainan\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Contest site: Deep Sea Museum, Hainan<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An open international contest is being held for a new Deep Sea Museum and Sports Centre in Sanya Yazhou Bay on the Chinese island province of Hainan [Deadline: 30 March 2023]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The competition seeks proposals for a new \u2018city-level comprehensive\u2019 cultural and sports facility to serve the growing Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project \u2013 backed by the Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City Administration \u2013 aims to create a new flexible complex which responds to local maritime culture and is able to withstand typhoons and the coastal tropical monsoon climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five shortlisted teams will be invited to participate in the anonymous design phase of the competition following an open call for qualifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the brief: \u2018The Deep Sea Museum and Sports Centre in Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City will become a large-scale public facility benefiting a population of one million in the Great Sanya area after completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018It aims to become a coastal brand image that highlights local characteristics, a high-quality public living place and a highly recognizable city landmark. This competition requires designers to fully respond to the local context and climate, and propose a site-specific and sustainable design scheme.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hainan is a small island province of China with a population of around 10 million people. Last year Heatherwick Studio won a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/heatherwicks-volcano-inspired-design-wins-chinese-opera-house-contest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contest to design a 101,629 m\u00b2 opera house<\/a>, inspired by volcanic landscapes, in the heart of Hainan\u2019s emerging Jiangdong cultural quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest project aims to deliver a flexible new multi-purpose cultural and fitness facility for the emerging 26.1km\u00b2 Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City development on the southernmost tip of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum will feature displays and experiences focussing on deep sea discovery and technology along with training, storage, research and communication spaces.
